Group Commends Tinubu, NNPCL Management for Insisting on Fuel Subsidy Removal

Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Development (CGGED) as a group of concerned Nigerians that Fuel subsidy should removed to allow the market forces of demand and supply to determine pump price of petroleum henceforth.

In a press release signed by the National Coordinator, Comrade Usman Abdulkadir and made available to the press on Wednesday, the group explained, their decision to support the removal of fuel subsidy is because, it discovered from the advantages of removing the fuel subsidy far outweighs the disadvantages business and economic development .

The National Coordinator also explained the failure of previous administrations to take decisive steps in order to stop importation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and outright removal of subsidy was the reason behind the recurring scarcity and fuel queues at our filling stations across the country .

Abdulkadir further noted that with the dwindling economy and paucity of funds, Nigeria cannot afford to continue to pay 1.2 Trillion naira monthly as fuel subsidy.

The group Coordinator further noted that
“If there is provisions made for fuel subsidy in the budget , how do we expect the current administration to pay for what is not appropriated for ? Any attempt to pay for subsidy now , will surely amount to breach law .More so, that government can’t withdraw money illegally to pay subsidy.

We now understand why the Management of Engineer Mele Kyari led NNPCL during an emergency press conference held at the NNPC Towers, Abuja, told Nigerians that the move was in the best interest of the company.

The Chief Executive Officer of the NNPCL revealed that the company has been spending a substantial amount of its profits in the subsidy of the product

He concluded, “It is against this background that we insist on removal of subsidy and the money used to pay subsidy in the past be used for development of agricultural and industrial Sectors.

We strongly believe that doing so will lead to high production of food and raw materials for industries as well as employment generation .

Anti-Corruption crusaders match in Lagos, insist on Bawa’s probe.

Anti-corruption crusaders in Nigeria are calling for the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), AbdulRasheed Bawa, to step down and face an investigation.

In a joint statement issued by the ‘Initiative for Ethics and Value Orientation’, ‘Northern Youth Frontiers’, ‘Niger Delta Youth Congress’, ‘National Movement for Democratic Change’, and ‘107 Anti-Corruption Crusade Groups’, signed by the Niger-Delta Youth Congress National Coordinator, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, Initiative for Ethics and Value Orientation, Comrade Bello Idowu and National President, Northern Youth Frontiers,Alhaji Mustapha Musa, allegations against Bawa, include selling 244 trucks to proxies for a fraction of the value, accepting bribes, and improperly using funds while on pilgrimage.

Other accusations against the EFCC chairman include conniving with the Attorney-General of the Federation in auctioning seized crude oil, authorising the sale of vessels under EFCC prosecution, and fingered in the discontinuation of a N25bn criminal charge.

The statement called on the incoming President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to make fighting corruption a top priority and clean house in the EFCC.

The full statement reads:

Background

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is an important government agency in Nigeria, established primarily to rid the society of corruption and not conceived as an agency for settling scores for political godfathers.

If a government agency expected to fight crime is found going about its business in a manner that mimics witch-hunt and selective justice while also being unable to deal with the corruption going on within its own workforce, the nation is headed for real time crises, conflict of confidence.

MOUNTING ALLEGATIONS

It is important to note that in Nigeria, despite government’s claim of making the fight against corruption and related practices a top priority, EFCC, the agency charged with the execution of the war, is in questions over mounting allegations of monumental corrupt practices that include:

• Allegations that about 80 per cent of cases under EFCC investigation are not taken to court. EFCC offices now literally serve as courtrooms.

• Last week, Zamfara state governor, Bello Matawalle, alleged that Bawa demanded the sum of $2million from him as bribe to stop a purported probe against him.

• Even before Abdulrasheed Bawa was presented as substantive EFCC Chairman, he has been arrested and detained by the anti-graft agency in 2019 for selling at least 244 trucks worth between N20-30 million each to his proxies at N100,000 per unit.

• He is also accused of recently expanding a large amount of money to the tune of $300,000 for hotels and other activities, which is far and beyond his income as civil servant, during a visit to Mecca with his family on a lesser Hajj.

• There are also allegations of connivance with the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami in auctioning of sea vessels holding crude oil seized by the Federal Government, violating Section 31(2) and (4) of the EFCC Act 2004.

• Malami and Bawa also allegedly authorized the sale of vessels by companies under EFCC prosecution for similar offence of illegal bunkering.

• Bawa and Malami were fingered in the discontinuation of a N25billion criminal charge against Senator Danjuma Goje without any justification after over seven years of diligent investigation and prosecution.

• Equally, the incident of Abel Isah, an EFCC cadet in Sokoto who was allegedly beaten to death by superior officers for refusing to sign off on incomplete exhibits is still fresh in the minds of Nigerians.

STANDARD PRACTICE

Like every other agency of government everywhere, there are global standards of practice for officials who had been accused of gross misconduct to step aside while investigations were conducted to ascertain the veracity of the allegations.

As pointed out earlier several eminent Nigerians have claimed to possess evidence of corrupt practices, breach of public trust and abuse of office against the EFCC and its Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

DEMAND FOR PROSECUTION

It is based on the above observations that the Initiative for Ethics and Value Orientation, Northern Youth Frontiers, Niger Delta Youth Congress, National Movement for Democratic Change and 107 Ant-Corruption Crusade Groups deem it necessary to demand that Abdulrasheed Bawa excuses himself from office and surrender for investigation.

We demand that if Bawa remains adamant, he be forced out and subjected to comprehensive probe the way his predecessor Ibrahim Magu was made to do.

Since it is obvious by now that the Buhari administration which brought Abdulrasheed Bawa is not disposed to initiating action, we call on the incoming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to make it first priority to cleanse the EFCC of corrupt leaders.

Corruption is one of the most serious social and security challenges facing Nigeria today which is the more reason why Tinubu should see it as an existential matter that needs to be addressed and tackled robustly and defeated once for all.

No nation can aspire to greatness or seek to remain secure and safe when corruption and other corrupt practices are allowed to find their way into all its vital institutions including the agency saddled with the responsibility of fighting it.

For this reason, corruption must be confronted with the entire will and resolve of the incoming administration beginning with thorough cleansing of the EFCC by first getting Bawa out and subjecting him to probe before extending action to cover other organs and tiers of government in Nigeria without exception.

Failure to do so will indubitably mean that every effort made by the anti-graft agency is headed by suspicious leaders will defeat all development endeavours of the incoming administration and render its task the more difficult and futile.

We remind the President-elect that National challenges such as the corruption we are faced with should not be treated with levity and condescension. Neither should action be limited to targeted individuals or tiers of government. On the contrary, corruption is a cross-national issue that affect every one of us regardless of where we live or come from”.

Tinubu Urged To Appoint Former AIG Inalegwu Police Affairs Minister.

….. Says competent hands needed for Tinubu to perform

As President-Elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu prepares to take over the mantle of leadership of the country from President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, an ex-parliamentarian, Hon Ibrahim Bello, has urged him to keep to his promise to ensure that members of his cabinet are chosen based on merit and competence, rather than favouritism and cronyism.

Bello, an erstwhile member of House of Representatives and Pan African Parliament (PAP), was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) and the secretary of Kaduna State Chapter.

The former lawmaker, who averred that Tinubu’s emergence as the President-elect was as a result of the belief and trust Nigerians have in his capacity to deliver, said the former Lagos Governor must surround himself with capable hands for him to be able to make significant progress in the governance of the country.

The Kaduna-born legal practitioner turned politician, in a statement, suggested that the incoming President should bring Retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, into his cabinet and make him the police affairs minister.

He noted that a quintessential police officer like Inalegwu, who meritoriously served Nigeria in different capacities within the Nigerian Police Force, with great sacrifice, devotion, dedication and patriotism, has what it takes to transform the police affairs ministry, charged with the responsibility of formulating policies to ensure the efficient and effective policing of the country.

His words: “The truth is that Nigerians believe very strongly in the ability of the incoming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to make a difference in the governance of the country, having seen the way he had worked relentlessly to transform Lagos when he held sway as the state governor between 1999 and 2007. However, if he must maintain that trust that Nigerians have for him, there would be every need for him to endeavour to ensure that only people with the right acumen, qualification, competence, pedigree and outstanding records of achievements and performance are appointed into positions of authority, particularly the cabinet members.

“As he gets set to receive the baton of office as President from Buhari on May 29, Jagaban, the master strategist and leader par excellence, must, just like he did as Lagos helmsman, assemble competent notable Nigerians with unquestionable character to work with him to take Nigeria to greater heights.”
Continuing, he said: “The incoming President should be thinking of bringing in the likes of ex-AIG of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu, a man who distinguished himself as a professional officer and for over three decades contributed to nation building and security matters via an impactful career in the Nigerian Police Force both in the local and international scene.

Tinubu should consider Inalegwu for appointment as police affairs minister as I’m confident that with his wealth of experience in general security policy development and implementation, he will do very well in that position to assist in the enhancement and reformation of Nigeria’s security architecture to secure the country.

“Inalegwu, a native of Idoma in Benue State, who retired from active service in 2019 but still determined and ready for the next best opportunity to further demonstrate his professionalism and skills acquired over the years, was at different times AIG of Police, Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia; Director, Central Planning and Training Unit (CPTU), Jos, Plateau State; Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command; Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Police Command; Commissioner of Police, Counter-Terrorism Unit; Commandant, Police College Kaduna; Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, FCT Command; Deputy Commissioner of Police, Presidential Villa, FCT, Abuja; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, FCT; Chief of Operations/Chief of Staff, United Nations’ Integrated Office in Sierra Leone and Team Leader, UNPOL Team Site Kono Eastern Sierra Leone.

The ex-legislator added that “These are just a few of the numerous positions Inalegwu held in the course of his career as a police officer. He was at no time found wanting as he came out of the service with a clean and unblemished record. Since he left the service, he has continued to make valuable contributions to issues of national importance, especially as it concerns security.”
